Frappe Mixes and Cream Chargers: What Goes in the Blender?

Where N2O fits in a frappe

A frappe is a blended drink. The base is made in a blender with the chosen frappe mix, milk or other specified liquid, ice and flavouring. A cream charger does not replace that blending step. Its useful role is separate: a compatible cream whipper can prepare a whipped topping to dispense onto the finished drink.

This distinction matters in a busy coffee shop. Do not put a thick, icy or particulate frappe blend into a cream whipper simply because it contains a frappe powder. Follow the mix manufacturer’s preparation directions and the dispenser manufacturer’s instructions for ingredients, maximum fill, compatible chargers and cleaning.

A simple service workflow

  1. Check the current label and allergen information for the frappe mix and any syrup. Measure ingredients to the mix manufacturer’s recipe and blend with ice in a blender.
  2. If offering a whipped topping, prepare a cold, smooth cream-based mixture in a compatible whipper. Strain out solids and stay within the marked fill capacity.
  3. Charge and dispense only as directed in that whipper’s manual. Add the topping to the blended drink at service, then garnish with the measured syrup or sauce if desired.
  4. Keep the drink and topping recipes separate on your prep sheet so staff can repeat portions and provide accurate allergen information.

Choosing flavour without overclaiming

A MONIN syrup or another suitable flavour syrup can be measured into a blended recipe, subject to its label and your chosen mix. Browse the frappe mixes range for the base. Check the exact SKU before making vegan, dairy-free, sugar-free or allergen claims: those properties vary by product and by topping.

N2O is used here for the whipped topping, not as a claim that the frappe itself becomes healthier, more sustainable or more intensely flavoured. Nitrogen (N2) for nitro cold brew is a different technique and needs equipment designed for it.

Equipment and safety

Use chargers and a whipper that the manufacturer specifies as compatible. iSi’s Cream Profi Whip instructions call for a cold mixture, straining solids, observing the maximum fill and following the cleaning procedure. Those directions are for that model; use the manual for your own equipment. Nitrous oxide is for legitimate culinary use only, not inhalation. See the Home Office guidance for the UK rules.
